How We Sell Bikes
First, we ask that you forget everything you know about bike shops. At SPORTFIT LAB, we take a new and unique approach to helping you buy the right bike for your body, riding style, and budget. Instead of filling a room with stock bikes and convincing you to buy one of them, we start by discussing your cycling needs and fitting you on our Fitmaster -- to your IDEAL RIDING POSITION. Once we’ve determined what you need, what you want, and what you can afford, we recommend only those bikes -- whether in our shop, in our manufacturers’ factories, or other bike shops -- that will give you complete satisfaction from the very first ride.
Looking for the best fit possible, or a unique ride that will turn heads? Then we’ll send your fit dimensions to our CUSTOM BIKE manufacturers, GURU or ALCHEMY, to build the bike of your dreams. Your bike’s frame will be cut and built to your exact measurements and specifications. Think custom bikes are too expensive? Think again! Not only will you save on expensive part changes after you own the bike, but you’ll only spend extra on parts that truly enhance your riding experience -- and save money by omitting unnecessary upgrades. And custom frames are often no more expensive than imported stock frames...and those stock bikes will often include the cost of shipping from China or Europe. Our custom bikes can be built of carbon fiber, titanium, or steel. Finally, custom frames give you the option of creating a unique look that will match your style and make you a proud bike owner on every ride.
Looking for a solid bike that costs less than full custom? No problem! With our SEMI-CUSTOM BIKE program, we choose from frames in a range of sizes, then customize the fit with the right saddle, handlebars, stem, crankset, and pedals. With some of these bike (e.g. GURU’s Fast Forward bikes), you can still choose from a range of colors. For many cyclists, semi-custom will produce a fit that’s just as good as full custom, but at lower cost. And you still pick the exact component package (gears, pedals, etc.) that you want, without wasting money on unneeded upgrades. We’ll help you choose gears and parts that will both fit perfectly and help you ride efficiently on whatever roads (or races) you frequent.
Prefer to shop elsewhere, or buy from one of the mass-market brands? No problem! We’ll give you your fitting measurements, as well as buying recommendations. And, after you’ve purchased, we’ll “dial in” your fit with a post-purchase fitting session (free with our Standard or Advanced Pre-purchase Fitting), so you’ll be as comfortable and efficient as possible.
Once you’ve purchased a bike from us, we don’t stop there. Because choosing a bike saddle (seat) is both personal and time-consuming, we give you UNLIMITED FREE SADDLE RENTALS (for up to 60 days) to find the perfect seat for your ride. Then we “dial in” a perfect fit by giving you FREE FITTING ADJUSTMENTS AS LONG AS YOU OWN YOUR BIKE. If you change shoes or pedals, we re-fit you. If your body, flexibility, or fitness changes, we re-fit you. Finally, we make you an honorary member of TEAM SPORTFIT, our family of cyclists, runners, and triathletes -- so you enjoy DISCOUNT PRICING AS LONG AS YOU OWN YOUR BIKE, on every product we sell, as well as our performance testing and training services.
Here at SPORTFIT LAB, your fit is first and your satisfaction is guaranteed.
Why We Sell Bikes
Since the first time I watched Greg Lemond win the Tour de France on TV, I’ve been in love with the idea of bike riding and racing. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen until I was well into my 20’s -- and living in bike unfriendly New York City. I was also busy building a fitness training business and competing -- sometimes professionally -- in another sport, squash. So, my bike riding was restricted to stationary bikes, which I used extensively for training.
Years later, my (now) wife Beth introduced me to road riding in Virginia, where country roads with rolling hills still abound. By then, Lance Armstrong was the cyclist to watch, so I purchased my first Trek road bike and learned the mysteries of gear shifting, clipping into road pedals, and riding with varying road and weather conditions. Beth was riding to compete in triathlons, and moved gradually from road cycling to dedicated “time-trialling.”
As my experience and bike expertise grew -- I didn’t grow up mechanically inclined -- I found that the world of cycling was much larger and more complex than I’d ever imagined. Yet, my basic love for riding as hard as I could -- so I could feel like those Tour de France guys I’d admired on TV -- continued to motivate me on the road. I also started to dabble in triathlon, and to learn that triathlon (time trial) cycling is a discipline unto itself, with unique requirements -- both physical and mechanical.
Finally, a career move offered me the opportunity to combine my biking passion with my training expertise. I attended the Serotta International Cycling Institute (SICI) to learn and be certified in bike fitting. Whereas most attendees were bike shop employees who knew little or nothing about physiology, I had already earned a Masters in Exercise Science -- and understood the biomechanics of cycling and the importance of proper positioning. SICI helped me refine that knowledge and apply it directly to fitting road and triathlon cyclists for comfort, power, and speed.
After developing expertise and experience as a bike fitter, I realized my limitations in mechanical knowledge were the last barrier to being truly competent in fitting, adjusting, and recommending bikes (and their components). To further my cycling education, I attended the Barnett Cycling Institute in Colorado Springs. There I completed a comprehensive bike building and maintenance course, which (literally and figuratively) gave me the tools to work on the bikes I was fitting, as well as recommend parts and components that would maximize the mechanical efficiency of each bike.
The more bike fitting I’ve done, the more I’ve come to realize that most cyclists -- even experienced ones -- have little knowledge to help them choose, test, and buy the right bike for their bodies and riding styles. And, unfortunately, most mass market bike shops are also ill-equipped to do any but the most basic (inseam anyone?) of body measurements before (often) recommending whichever bikes they are most anxious to sell off their showroom floor. Moreover, many cyclists just don’t fit well on the stock bikes available from the major manufacturers, resulting in uncomfortable or even injured riders. This is even more true of triathletes, whose bodies must endure grueling time trials in an extreme aerodynamic position.
With comfort, power, and endurance as the prime considerations, I decided to offer custom and semi-custom bike solutions to cyclists (and triathletes) of all ages and abilities. Now, you can shop (here or elsewhere, after we fit you) for a bike with the full confidence that it will fit you properly and give you the riding experience you want, from the very first ride. Say goodbye to discomfort, pain, and being left behind in group rides or races. Say goodbye to expensive part changes, hoping one more change will change the bike you bought into the bike you really want. Say hello to Sportfit Lab, where YOUR FIT IS OUR FIRST CONSIDERATION. We hope you will never look at bike shopping the same way again, and let us be your resource for cycling fun and success.
