VO-2, Heart Rate, and Respiration Testing
Fitmate Pro
Fitmate Pro - Medical accuracy in exercise testing
WHAT IS IT?
Oxygen uptake (VO2) during exercise is a reliable indicator of aerobic capacity and cardio-respiratory fitness.  Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max.) is often used to measure and compare aerobic endurance fitness, so you can assess your current fitness level and monitor improvements as you train.  We also use the testing data to set your personal heart rate zones for training, so you train more efficiently and improve more quickly.  We have two types of VO2 tests we can perform, depending on your level of interest (and budget):

♦ VO2 Testing - using our Fitmate Pro oxygen analyzer, we directly measure your oxygen uptake during cycling or running at SportFit Lab, for the most scientifically accurate data on your endurance fitness.  You can use your own bike or our equipment.  This is a 20-30 minute test and can also be combined with Lactate Balance Point testing (an additional 15-20 minute test) to get a complete picture of your aerobic endurance, anaerobic endurance ("threshold"), race readiness, and precise training zones.

♦ Basic Heart Zones Test - for beginners or those on a budget, this quick test will estimate your VO2 max., your maximum heart rate, and your training zones.  It is based on Polar® Heart Rate Variability technology and is performed at rest.  This test can also be combined ["Basic Cardio Fitness Package"] with our Body Composition test for a great (and inexpensive) way to monitor your fitness or start a training program.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
First, VO2 testing is a good way to test and monitor your aerobic endurance capacity.  Before training, your VO2 max. is a baseline from which to start.  During or after training, it can tell you whether your training is improving your endurance.
Perhaps more importantly, testing is important to establish YOUR PERSONAL TRAINING ZONES.  Without testing, you are at the mercy of canned training programs based on averages - it's unlikely YOUR body will respond appropriately to training designed for others.
Once we test your VO2 , we can accurately determine YOUR best training zones, so you can improve your performance efficiently.

HOW DO WE MEASURE IT?

♦  For VO2 Testing, the Fitmate Pro™ by Cosmed® is a medical-grade oxygen analyzer which measures respiration, oxygen consumption, and heart rate – at rest and during exercise.  During a graded exercise test, you wear a comfortable (and personal) oxygen mask, as well as a comfortable heart rate monitor (chest strap) as you exercise on the cycle or treadmill.  We monitor your heart rate, power, breathing, and perceived exertion throughout the test.  The Fitmate does the rest!  Keep your personal mask for follow-up tests.

♦  For Basic Heart Zones Testing, we use the Polar® CS800 heart rate monitor.  This is a comfortable chest strap which measures your heart rate as well as heart rate variability, while you simply sit comfortably.  Polar technology combines the data to give us estimates of your maximum heart rate, VO2 max., and training zones.
